Our local youth council is always looking for movies for tweens and teens and I think I've found a pretty good one. Ice Girls is an  inspiring story of a true underdog, featuring renowned skating stars Elvis Stojko and Tessa Virtue.  After watching the DVD myself, I figured the movie is definitely something the kids will be able to relate to.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will be giving away free tickets to “Symphony Celebration: Thank You, Little Rock!,” a concert to be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the newly-renovated Robinson Performance Hall. Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 on the front steps of Robinson Center in downtown Little Rock. There is a limit of four tickets per person and the tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Tickets must be reserved in-person on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Have you listened to the radio lately while riding with your kids?  OMG, it's terrible.  One minute it's kid friendly and the next, ummmmm... notsomuch.  We gave up on radio during our morning commute years ago when Disney radio left our local station.  Switched over to satellite radio and it offered a few kid friendly choices BUT the kids get tired of listening to the same-o same-o.

Earlier this week, my heart was broken to hear the story of 10-year old Kayden Culp of  Kerrville, Texas who was set on fire by bullies ages 9, 10 and 11.  Let that sink in. Bullying must stop. When my middle son was in the 1st grade he was bullied.  My son had a severe speech deficit and there was a kid who picked on him constantly.  My husband and I met with my kid's teacher and there was a plan to meet with the other child's parent but she never showed up at any of the meetings.  Then one day we received a call from a substitute teacher - who was a trainer at the gym hubby works out at.  She told us our son was punched in the mouth and is in the nurse's office.  His two front teeth had been knocked out.   You cannot imagine my horror when I arrived at the school to see my kid.  I was horrified. Our horror continued as we had to file a police report against a 1st grader for assault.   We changed schools the following week. ...

Our youth group were putting on a skit to encourage adults to vote and I asked my kids to participate. All were willing, 'cept one. He said he didn't feel comfortable encouraging others to participate in this year's election because he didn't support any of the candidates. Say what.?! Here he stood, my kid, who granted isn't even old enough to vote, but steadfast in his belief. I didn't know whether to applaud him or freak out. "What do you mean not vote?" His comments made me wonder what would happen if other voters felt the same. Perish the thought. It was then I channeled an old college professor who once told me "Doing nothing is a decision and therefore, there are repercussions." I had to remind my child that I know this election seems to be a battle of the Lesser of Two Evils for some, but if you are a registered voter it is so important that you exercise your right to vote.
