Reminding Myself that Good Leaders Ask Great Questions

Each year our local Chamber of Commerce offers a program which connects high school students with local business leaders. Participating students received 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadershi p by John C. Maxwell. Each week during the program, students delved into Maxwell's book and principles therein. I had the opportunity to speak with some of the students and was really impressed as the students were able to apply the principles in the book to everyday life and their school studies. The lessons learned are sure to come in handy as these students prepare to enter the workforce. I was introduced to John C. Maxwell's leadership principles a few years ago in a career workshop. You sometimes think those workshops are a waste of time and money. However, I feel I got my money's worth as I still apply some of the principles I learned in that workshop. Developing good leadership skills is important to me because there are times when it's an "If not ME, then WHO"

Why Natural Hair STILL Matters

pic courtesy of CreateHerStock I was thinking of writing a post on natural hair because of a conversation an acquaintance and I had over the "lack of growth" of my natural hair. Then I read about Pretoria Girls High School in South Africa and I KNEW I had to express my thoughts.

My Fave 5 Lip Balms

I looked in my purse and I had 3, yes 3 lip balms. Sad huh? I hope not because I love lip balms. I've got glosses and flavors and salves and more. Love, love them all! I always have a variety of lip balms in my purse, in my bag, in my car, in my wallet, everywhere 'cept my pockets. Lesson learned after washing a lip balm or two and forever ruining some fave jeans. Here are my Fave 5 lip balms ( in no particular order ) Bath and Body Works C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine : BEST gloss ever plus a powerful kick of mint! Super shiny and extra glossy and sure to leave your lips poppin'! eos : Evolution of Smooth is the COOLEST lip balm ever. Lunching at Soul Fish Cafe'

I get excited whenever a new restaurant opens up, especially when it's within walking distance from my job. A few weeks ago Soul Fish Café, a chain restaurant based out of Memphis opened and I have been eyeing the place waiting for the initial "new restaurant" hype to die down before dining there. Today it happened. My Dining Divas asked what's for lunch and I suggested Soul Fish Café. My suggestion was surprising since fish isn't my thing and the menu is filled with fish options. I know hard to imagine a place named Soul Fish specializing in, well, fish. *side eye/snark*

Checking Out the Galaxy Note 7 at the BlogHer '16 Best Buy Experience

Disclosure: The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy  Gift Card  and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free. I can't believe it's been 2 weeks since BlogHer '16.  There was so much to see and do.   I was so excited to check out the Best Buy Mobile Plan and Compare Tool and be among the first to try out the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 .  Yes, store launch was mid-August and we got to test a full 2 weeks before it hit the store. I was surprised to learn nearly 50% of cell phone users overpay their monthly cell phone bill.  The Best Buy team helped me use the Mobile Plan and Compare tool - which is available at all Best Buy stores I must add - and I was surprised to learn I could save some serious dough by making a few changes to my mobile plan and even upgrade our phones.   I did some calculating and figured out we could save enough to pay band fees for all three of our sons for the entire year with the money we sa

V.C. Andrews Continues to Wow Even 35 Years After Her Death

A love of reading is something I can truly say I inherited from my mom. I can remember sneaking away to read her V.C. Andrews' novels. Of course I was hooked on V.C. Andrews the moment I read Flowers in the Attic and my love of her writings has blossomed ever since. Author V.C. Andrews passed away in the late 1980's.  However, her estate continues to publish books every year since Andrews' untimely passing. My Sweet Audrina was first published in the early '80s so it was quite surprising to see Simon and Schuster announce the publication of a sequel some 35+ years later.

Learning to Embrace THE POWER OF I AM

Last year, I read Osteen's THE POWER OF I AM . I am a huge fan of his books as they are so inspirational and a call to action for the readers.  Now, the book is being released as a paperback.   I think of myself as a beacon of positivity but there are times when I am so heavy burdened with thoughts of my responsibilities as a wife, mother, the bills I have to pay not to mention worries of affairs of dear family and friends. Yet, no matter what troubles await me, I am up to the challenge. I surround myself with positive thoughts and keep moving forward because I know I AM a conqueror.

Back To School: No Tears Allowed #BTS

Summer flew by and now it's time for the first day of school. Doesn't matter if your kid is beginning their first day of kindergarten like the Littlest One, heading to middle school or gearing up for their senior year of high school, there's nothing like the first day of school. No one ever told me the first day of school would be so emotional. Not for the kiddos but for us parents.    A friend and I were talking the other day and she confessed she was a total wreck when she dropped her youngest off for her first day at her new middle school. She just sat in her car and cried as she watched her daughter walk up the steps to her classroom.  The feeling was mutual. I confessed I too boo-hooed all the way from the kids' school to the office parking garage.  I don't know what it is but I always get so emotional after dropping the kids off on the first day of school. It's just something I've come to expect. It's my first day of school ritual I gu

God Made You Just Right Book Review

A few years ago, a friend asked me to design a graduation card for her daughter who was graduating from middle school. She asked me to include the scripture Jeremiah 29:11 which states "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." What an empowering message to share with anyone, particularly a child of any age. God Made You Just Right is a delightfully, illustrated board book which uses this scriptural reference to convey the message of appreciation for individuality. Each of us is beautifully and wonderfully made. The book serves as a reminder that there is no one else like you. Author Jill Roman Lord does a great job using easy to read text coupled with a powerful message for children of all ages. The Little Old Lady and the Littlest One enjoyed reading God Made You Just Right  and we look forward to sharing with our church library. • Board book: 20 pages • Pub
