Hubby's Hot Toddy Cold Remedy

Disclosure: I am proud to be a #NSNationBlogger. I receive Nutrisystem products in exchange for my posts.
My great great grandma always had a home remedy on hand for whatever ailed us.  Although it's been decades since she passed away I often think of her especially on days like this when I'm not feeling my best.  I've been battling this cold for nearly a week now. What a way to bring in the new year huh?  YUCK!!!

It's times like this I think of my great, great grandma and how if one of us kids was sick, she would line all of us up and everyone got a spoonful of grandma's home remedy and a steaming hot toddy.  I never knew what was in it but I was old enough to know honey and some sort of alcohol were key ingredients.  Grandma's hot toddy guaranteed a good night's rest and waking up relieved of whatever ailed you.

Over the years, I've tried a few hot toddy recipes here and there but the one we use the most is my hubby's hot toddy recipe.  I'm sipping on one right now with the hopes it'll help knock out this "crud" and get back to being my sunny self.  This fab mom has places to be and things to do.
A traditional Hot Toddy contains
water, whiskey, lemon and honey
Hubby made good use of some of the liquor we purchased during our cruise last year.  I'll be the first to admit alcohol is a huge barrier to weight loss.  Dark liquors like whiskey and bourbon tend to be high in calories but an occasional drink every now and then shouldn't hurt your weight loss goals.  Alcohol is considered an "extra" on the Nutrisystem plan and if you want to stick to your weight loss goals, it is imperative you are mindful of how many extras you are indulging in.  I make a conscious effort to keep my extras to a minimum.  I would rather fill up on veggies and all the good stuff than empty calories which delay my weight loss goals.

I found a Hot Toddy recipe sans alcohol on the Nutrisystem website which is perfect for those who prefer a non-alcohol version or a cold remedy perfect for daytime.  Hubby's Hot Toddy is pretty similar except for the addition of 2 oz. (1/4 cup) of alcohol.  Both are a great way to warm up and get some much needed relief from cough and colds.
I'm maintaining my 35-lb. weight loss and still looking forward to losing more as the weeks go on.  Back to the track once I get over this bug.  In the meantime, I'll sip on this tea.
Do you have a tried and true home remedy?  Mom's chicken noodle soup?  Uncle's matzo ball soup?  What's your family go to remedy for coughs and colds?

I've been battling the flu for over a week and I made a few homemade cough syrups during the battle. I've actually had something similar to this hot toddy before when I've had a cold and it really works. Hope you feel better soon. Oh, and I agree that homemade chicken noodle soup is awesome too.

Feel better soon Alli. I was able to rest last night and I'm hoping to feel better as the day drags on.
I've heard of hot toddyies for years but have never had the opportunity to try one. When I'm not feeling well I drink lots of orange juice as well as lots of chicken broth.

My husband makes me toddies just like this! They are the best remedy. I remember mom used to put clove drops in my ears for earaches.

I need to try this out. I hate being sick, so I'm always up to try anything that will make me feel better. I do hope you feel better.
I have heard of other people using something similar to battle a cold that just won't go away. We don't drink so not using the liquor is a big one for us. Have any other suggestions to replace the whiskey?

I love drinking lemon with honey every day> I think this is a good home made cold medicine. I maybe replace the whiskey to something non alcoholic.

Sorry I caught Alli's comment at the end of reading the post - went to let the dog out and in my own ill brain mixed your post and her comment into one - so get well soon Alli and to you thank you for the obviously much needed hot toddy to help me get well ;).

I'm really liking the idea of a hot toddy for the colder seasons. It's flu season amongst my peers so this would definitely come in handy.

Sorry to hear that your cold is lasting so long! 'Tis the season, as they say. Here's to hoping you feel better real soon - I'm sure this hot toddy will help!

If I had to think of a family remedy for cough season I would say chicken and dumplings. I've heard of a hot toddy but I wasn't sure how to make one.

My dad used to make a cough syrup tha had homemade moonshine in it. No one could stand the taste but it certainly worked!

When feeling bad - a sore throat and cough - I will try almost anything. I've tried something like this and think it did help.

Home remedies that have been handed down from generation to generation are really effective and have the ingredient of wisdom which makes them effective. Honey is a powerful medicinal substance and great for colds and coughs. The hot toddy is indeed something the doctor would have prescribed.

I never knew hot today till I read your post but old home remedies always works. I found that out with my Moms Ginger tea ( ginger, lemon and honey).

I'm not really sure my mum had any home recipes. As an adult though I prefer to avoid medicine unless I really need it, so I'm normally drink warm drinks if I have a mild cold

A hot toddy provides so much relief from a nasty cold. It does not "cure" the cold, but it relieves you of the symptoms and gives you a restful sleep. We make a cup for anyone in the family with a cold. I think it is the lemon and honey really does the trick.

Hot Toddy's can be so useful when you're sick! I like to pack mine up with all the anti-cold stuff, so I make a hot toddy with apple cider vinegar, lemon, echinacea tea, and whiskey haha!
You know what is funny? I NEVER knew what exactly a Hot Toddy was until I read your post! Next time I get a cold, I am going to try this. It is also nice to know that there is a recipe sans alcohol on the Nutrisystem website, in case I want to go that route instead! I am bookmarking this post. Thank you :)

Here’s your chance to start the new year off with a win. One lucky Three Boys and an Old Lady blog reader will receive a $15 Walmart eGift card. $10 may not seem like a lot but it’s enough to stock up on some last minute Christmas clearance gifts. Trust me. I bought a 6’ Christmas tree WITH lights, 2 animal massagers, 3 Jelly Belly BeanBoozled Jelly Beans Mystery Bean Dispenser, Christmas cards and wrapping paper less than $20 during an after Christmas Walmart shopping trip.

I was searching for some cough syrup when my friend’s kid spotted the Jelly Belly BeanBoozled Jelly Beans Mystery Bean Dispenser on sale for 50 cents. What a steal! The regular price is $10 so to find them on sale for 50 cents was a deal. We cleared the shelves.

A few rows down we spotted some animal neck massager…
