Why My Attendance at ShiftCon Matters

Earlier today a friend and I were coming back from a meeting and noticed how the landscape of a nearby neighborhood had changed over the last 5 years.  I really don't when the lone grocery store in the area closed or the neighborhood garden disappeared but the realization of the growing food desert in the area really stunned us both.

When I referred to the area as a food desert, she asked what I meant.
What's a 'food desert'?", she asked.
A food desert is an area void of grocery stores, farmers markets, places where persons can purchase fresh fruits and veggies.

After driving around a bit we discovered the nearest grocery store was over 10 miles away.  That may not seem like much but to an elderly person with no car or a growing family the lack of fresh fruits and veggies often ties to increased obesity and other health related problems.

We've heard the saying
You Are What YOU Eat
Now think about it, if unhealthy foods are the only available options, then we are more apt to make unhealthy choices.

I want to do something to help.  When I think of all the people in that neighborhood who no longer have immediate access to a nearby grocery store or community garden, it saddens me deeply.  I have to do something.

Attending ShiftCon is the first step in learning possible ways to get started and make something happen.

ShiftCon is an empowering forum where we can connect, share, learn and organize with other Shifters at a conference which focuses on food, wellness, health, sustainability and more.

I am all about learning more about food. I admit, I love my junk food, but I do know that I should eat healthier and know more where my food is coming from.

I have worked with a garden project to feed those in a food desert close to where I live. We collectively plant vegetables and take them to food centers for distribution.

This looks like a really informative conference. I attend meetings for a group that addresses the food desert in the south suburbs of Chicago.

I am glad you brought food deserts to our attention. So true this can be a big issue when it comes to accessibility and convenience.

Life is a Beach Giveaway Hop

Spring is in full swing.  The birds are singin'.  The pollen is falling and temps are FINALLY warming up.  So what better time time to start planning our Summer getaways. This year - as always - we are beach bound.  It's one of our fave places to visit given we only get to the beach once or twice a year.   Last year's visit to Cozumel was one for the record books. We stopped by this little restaurant and dined on grilled shrimp in a cabana right on the beach.   'Ohana also has a line of tequilas in flavors I had never seen before.  Tropical flavors such as coconut, mango and pina colada.  Hubby and I tried the 'Ohana peanut butter tequila.  The owner said folks either love it or hate it... we LOVED it!!! As I was sipping all I could think of was how good this peanut butter tequila would taste as a baste on my tequila wings.  It would be like a tequila satay wings type dish. * * * G I V E A W A Y * * * One lucky Three ...
