You would think with all the chaos in the Three Boys and an Old Lady household this fab mama would be down in the dumps but nope, I'm STILL smiling.
I can't explain it but the challenges of the past couple of months have been nothing compared to my faith.
I started reading this 60 Days of Happiness, a book I received from Tyndale House Publishers. I committed myself to reading each daily devotional. Little did I know the wisdom therein would help me through some of the toughest times in my life.
One day in January, my son approached his dad and I saying he wanted a letter.
A letter?
Then he followed by saying he wanted to try out for the wrestling team.
The wrestling team?
We were totally surprised given neither of our four kids inherited their dad's athleticism and trust me we have tried every sport under the son. So when J expressed interest in trying out for the team we were supportive, but surprised to say the least.
Fast forward to Saturday, January 21.
My kid, who typically wrestled JV, received the opportunity to wrestle Varsity. Turns out the kid who normally wrestled Varsity was over the weight class by 2 ounces. Therefore, my son received the opportunity to wrestle Varsity. #ProudMomMoment
I was so thrilled and had my camera rolling and then it happened.
The sound of his ankle breaking echoed throughout the gym.
A huge gasp filled the arena.
My kid
in shock
bounced up from the mat
attempting to stand
and fell flat on the floor...
His dad and I raced to the gym floor...
His teammates circled me trying to keep me calm...
The opponent's coach stood beside me as I trembled before him...
My mind knew it was an accident.
I never should have let him wrestle...
I never should have let him wrestle...
I never should have let him wrestle.
Would you like to experience true happiness?
For my kid it was trying out for the team and making it. We never imagined less than 6 weeks into the season, he would sustain a broken ankle.
When it comes to happiness, most of us have the same questions. Why can’t I be consistently happy? Is it wrong to be happy when there’s so much pain and suffering in the world? And perhaps the biggest one: How can I be happier? Some Christians make an artificial contrast between joy and happiness, while others claim God wants us to be holy, but not happy. In fact, he wants us to be both, and the two go hand in hand!
In 60 Days of Happiness, noted theologian and New York Times bestselling author Randy Alcorn shares sixty timeless devotions demonstrating that God not only wants us to be happy in him and enjoy his gifts, he commands and empowers us to do so.
We have to understand happiness means different things to different people. For me, there was happiness in my son setting a goal and seeing it come to fruition. My kid, well he earned his varsity letter. That one tournament match put him in the running for a letter. Talk about happiness. Even with the injury and all, there is happiness.
It's been about a little over 60 days since his injury and I have continued to reflect upon the lessons I learned reading 60 Days of Happiness. I trust in our Heavenly Father and I am forever grateful my son is on the path to healing. It'll be a long road but we are taking it one day at a time and praying each and every single day.
Be blessed,
