I remember the headlines of the escape, manhunt and capture of Brian Nichols. Nichols overpowered a sheriff's deputy then returned to a courtroom where he murdered two, shot an officer as he fled the courthouse and later shot another officer before carjacking others and forcing his way into the home of Ashley Smith. He bound Ashley with tape and an extension cord and held her hostage for seven hours. Sources report Nichols' girlfriend had given birth to a son and he escaped jail so he could see his infant son but that was never to be.
Ashley, like many of us, was starting a study of the popular book, The Purpose Driven Life. She hadn't long been into her studies of the book before it would prove to change her life. As she was returning home from a local store one day, she was accosted by Nichols. Captive chronicles the paths of two people, one on the run and the other tired from running. A chance encounter that would change their lives forever.
The role of Brian Nichols is played by Golden Globe Nominee David Oyelowo. Oyelowo was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie, Selma. His portrayal of the vicious murderer was decent. Yet I was most intrigued by the humility of Ashley Smith, portrayed by Kata Mara. Smith comes across as a weakened, frightened woman who finds strength in an unlikely source...herself. Smith was a woman who by all accounts was down on her luck. She was recently widowed. Her daughter was living with a relative while she got herself clean and life kept striking her down. There's a part in the movie where Nichols asks Smith if she has any drugs to which she responds by lining up some meth for him to smoke. Nichols asks Smith to join him to which she responds "I don't wanna go to Heaven and see God only to say let me wipe my nose, I just finished doing drugs."
Overall, a decent flick. Family friendly and a wonderful reminder of the power of God's word. God's word ministered to both Nichols and Smith. Two people who by a chance encounter were led to do the right thing... surrender. Nichols, to authorities and Smith, surrendering herself to God foregoing the substances which kept her bound.
As I watched Captive, I couldn't help but think of things which have kept me captive over the years preventing me from being the best me I can be. Feelings of insecurity and doubt have held me captive long enough. From time to time I have to remind myself I have everything I need to do everything I need to do. What a mantra for the new year. Let's refuse to be held captive any longer. *fist pump*
To celebrate the new year and my fervent prayer to no longer be held captive to those things which prevent me from being the best me I can be, I want to know will you join me in praying for an empowering 2016? Will you? Will you speak words of encouragement to yourself and others? Stand with me!
To celebrate our commitment for a year of empowerment, I am proud to partner with FlyBy Promotions to share in the release of Captive. A miraculous story about the power of faith and the spiritual collision of two lost souls.
