Great Grandma's Hot Cocoa Topped with Whitney's Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe

When I was a kid my great grandma from West Virginia would visit us each Winter.  My siblings and I looked forward to her silver dollar pancakes, brownies and hot cocoa.  Seeing Jimmy Fallon's recent Instagram post of he and his family enjoying Frozen Hot Chocolate reminded me of those days spent with Granny Lucille sipping her famous hot cocoa.

Here's our adaptation of the classic Hershey's Cocoa recipe to share with your loved ones.  I shared it on my blog a few years ago and it's still a Winter favorite for our Three Boys and an Old Lady blog readers only this year we're topping it with Masterchef Whitney Miller's Homemade Whipped Cream as featured in her new book, Whitney Miller's New Southern Table.

Ingredients for Hot Cocoa
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
  • 1/3 cup hot water
  • 4 cups (1 qt.) milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
  1. Stir together sugar, cocoa in medium saucepan; stir in water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Boil and stir 2 minutes.
  2. Add milk; stirring constantly, heat to serving temperature. Do Not Boil. You don't want to scald the milk.
  3. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Beat with rotary beater or whisk until foamy. Serve topped with marshmallows or whipped cream, if desired. Five 8-oz. servings.

Ingredient for Whitney Miller's Whipped Topping
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 - 2.5 tablespoons powdered sugar

Directions
Place a large bowl in the freezer for 5 minutes.  Remove the bowl from the freezer, pour in the heavy cream, and beat with an electric mixer on high speed until peaks form.  Gradually beat in the powdered sugar.  Use immediately or place in the refrigerator until serving time.

Whitney's whipped topping is a delicious way to top my great grandma's hot cocoa.  Whitney's cookbook features some pretty tasty recipes that don't require a lot of work.  #DinnerWinner  I am planning on trying her olive oil biscuit recipe and a few others in this cookbook.

Life is a Beach Giveaway Hop

Spring is in full swing.  The birds are singin'.  The pollen is falling and temps are FINALLY warming up.  So what better time time to start planning our Summer getaways. This year - as always - we are beach bound.  It's one of our fave places to visit given we only get to the beach once or twice a year.   Last year's visit to Cozumel was one for the record books. We stopped by this little restaurant and dined on grilled shrimp in a cabana right on the beach.   'Ohana also has a line of tequilas in flavors I had never seen before.  Tropical flavors such as coconut, mango and pina colada.  Hubby and I tried the 'Ohana peanut butter tequila.  The owner said folks either love it or hate it... we LOVED it!!! As I was sipping all I could think of was how good this peanut butter tequila would taste as a baste on my tequila wings.  It would be like a tequila satay wings type dish. * * * G I V E A W A Y * * * One lucky Three ...
